Why Motivation Is Not Enough To Get You Where You Want To Be

Throughout the week I had some conversations surrounding the topics of motivation and discipline.

Self help books and motivational speakers like to use these topics to help get people fired up and excited.

Motivation is very subjective to the individual.

There are financial motivators that people have.

Someone may be motivated to have enough wealth to travel multiple times a year, live in a certain house, or support create a certain type of lifestyle for their family.

Others may be motivated for other reasons.

They want to improve their health so they can get off of medication.

Others may want to feel confident in themselves again.

I like to think of motivation as the ignition.

You wake up one day, feeling that you have had enough of what ever your current situation is.

You are motivated to get to work on improving your career, your fitness, your health, or whatever it is that is motivating you.

But, the ugly truth is that no matter what your motivator is, chances are that the motivation will not last forever.

You see, motivation is tough to control.

Motivation fades, and it comes and goes.

At least, that has been my experience with my motivators.

Some days you are ready to take on the world, and others you feel like just crawling back in bed or on the couch and binge watch your favorite series.

You are human and this happens to all of us.

But, the one thing that you have more control over is your ability to stay disciplined.

Motivation is a feeling, and feelings are not that easy to control.

But being disciplined is an action and a choice.

Both of which you have the power over.

You may be so motivated the first week of a strength training program, but all of a sudden the motivation fades.

A lot of people would just call it quits at that point.

But those who achieve great success in anything in life, don't give in that easily.

On those days where you feel less motivated, give what you can.

If you aren't motivated to hit a high intensity workout, take a walk instead.

Make the choice to do something, rather than nothing.

Being disciplined will get you through those periods of time where you feel motivation fading.

If you want to hit your goals, then you absolutely need to have both.

Motivation can help you get started, and can help remind of you of why you started in the first place.

Being discipline will help you stay consistent, especially on those days were your motivation may not be at its highest.
