Setting your eating boundaries

When it comes to creating new healthy habits, it may feel like you have no control over anything.

You may be feeling so tempted by the convenience of fast food or feel like you don't stand a chance against those late night cravings for something salty or sweet.

One of the most common struggles that people have when they start up with me is trying to beat those late night cravings.

These cravings can come out of nowhere. Sometimes it may be boredom, other times it may be stress, or maybe you can't even explain it but you know that late night snack will solve all your problems.

One suggestion that may help you is

setting up your own eating boundaries.

What this means is that you decide what hours of the day you will be eating between.

For example, you may decide that you only eat between 7 am and 7 pm, or maybe you work on a different schedule and your eating boundary is more like 10 am to 8 pm.

With this strategy, a full day of eating can look like breakfast at 7:30, lunch at 12 pm, snack at 3 pm, dinner around 6 pm, and then finishing the day with any treat or dessert before 7 pm so that you are not eating anything past that 7pm mark.

The goal of the this type of strategy is to give you

a sense of control over your nutrition.

With this new found control of yours, you can have more power over the calories that you consume throughout the day.

Of course, there can and should be some flexibility with this method; I would not suggest you say no to that family dinner just because the reservation is for 7:30 pm.

The eating boundary method is best placed during the week when there is probably more of a consistent routine than during the week.

Being able to have flexibility is one of the key components of a healthy relationship with food and with your own health.

If you are struggling with late night snacking, feel as if you are eating too much late at night, than consider giving this strategy a shot.
