What Makes a Good Online Coach?

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Online training seems to be all the rage these days. As a coach myself, I am bombarded by ads saying they know the secret to great online training. However, they seem to focus on making trainers rich, which makes me ponder. How much does this online trainer really care about their clients?

Sometimes, I get the impression that it is very little. When if you ask me, the attention should be all on YOU. The client, the person that we as trainers and coaches, regardless of in person or online (or both) should be determined to help. Determined to help not just loose weight, get stronger, or build muscle. But help you realize what you are capable of, what you can really do not just in the gym, but also outside of the gym. You have the power to create real lifestyle change that will go beyond adding weight to the bar or losing some body fat. You may just need a little guidance to help get you there.

Now, there are many exceptionally good online trainers out there. These are the ones that I have been unofficially mentored by. I say unofficially because they probably don’t know me at all, but I have read their books, listened to their videos, and looked closely at what tactics they used to get me to sign up for something. And after all of that, I can say that these widely successful online trainers and coaches do one thing consistently above all else. They put the client first!

Putting you as the client first does many things, but most of all, it puts YOU in the best position to get to YOUR goals faster. These are the little things like weekly check ins to keep you accountable, understanding that you may have injuries you still can’t get past, understanding that you are likely to have a life outside of the gym, and finally, understanding that you are a human being and you deserves to be treated like one. And not just like another dollar sign.

To me, the passion that I get from working with someone is being a part of their entire process. Sure we get excited about the numbers on the bar or the number going down on the scale (or going up if its your goal). But what really gets me excited to work with people each and every day, is hearing that your training is helping you do the things you never thought you could do. Whether it be playing sports again after an injury, making getting to the gym on your own a part of your weekly routine, eating fruits and veggies each and every day, and everything in between.

In my opinion trainers tell people how to work out. And there are really great trainers who do really get things with their clients, and those trainers deserve all the glory. But to me, a coach teaches, guides, and is right beside you every step of the way. And if you and I ever work together, I will 100% guarantee I will be your coach the whole way through.
