Why You Shouldn't Wait To Get In Shape To Start Strength Training

Many people delay their fitness goals from becoming a reality because they fall victim to this myth.

"I need to get in shape before I start really strength training"

Starting anything new is going to be a challenge.

While I do believe timing is crucial, I do believe some people use timing as an excuse.

If someone told me that they are too busy at work, they have troubles at home, they are moving, they are taking care of a sick family member, I would probably not suggest to add a 4 day per week strength training program on top of all that.

That could be too much all at once and something would fall through the cracks.

However, if someone says that they don't feel in shape enough to start strength training, or they just don't feel ready, then it becomes a different conversation.

That conversation switches from the uncontrollable chaos of life, to how you are viewing yourself.

I have worked with people of all different backgrounds, ages, and personalities.

In the past 6 years, I have come to learn what people really mean when they say things.

When someone says: "I want to start strength training, but I don't feel in shape enough yet", I think to myself there must be more behind this.

Especially since strength training will 100% help you get in shape.

After speaking with countless people over my career, I've come to learn what someone really means when they say things like that.

What they are really saying is:

"I want to do this, but I don't think I can stick with it"

"I just don't believe this will work for me"

"I don't believe I will be able to stick to this for as long as I need to to see results"

"I have never done this before, so I am a little hesitant to start"

If these sound like things you have said to yourself, my first response to you is it is 1000% okay to have these thoughts and feelings.

You are human, and you may have some self doubt when you are considering starting something new like strength training.

In fact, many client's of mine had those same thoughts.

Take my online client Jeremy for example.

He felt hesitant to start due to his concerns about the amount of time he would have to dedicate to his program.

But, we came up with personalized training schedule, and slowly built it up when he felt ready, confident, and believed in himself that he can do it.

This personalized approach helped Jeremy lose 41 lbs. in the months leading up to his wedding!

Even I have those moments of hesitation and concern like Jeremy had and like you may have.

Every time I started something new that was important but challenging to me there was that little voice in my head saying:"do you really believe you are ready for this."

Do you want to know what I said to that little voice?

I said, "You know what little voice in my head, I am not sure. But, I am going to give it all I have. I am going give it my best shot. I know it wont be perfect and I know I will make mistakes. But I will learn from those mistakes, and I will commit to myself so I can see this thing through for as long as I can"

Now, allow me to turn it back over to you.

You may never really know when you are 100% ready to start a strength training program.

But, what I can say is that the longer you put off starting, the harder it will be to take that first step.
